Postdoctoral Research Fellow in Solar Physics

Monash University & High Altitude Observatory of NCAR

The Mathematics Department of Monash University, and the High Altitude Observatory (HAO) at the National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR) invite applications for a Postdoctoral Research Fellow to conduct research on the project ``Sunspot Seismology'' with Drs Paul Cally (Monash) and Thomas Bogdan (HAO).

The successful applicant will be based primarily at Monash University (Melbourne, Victoria, Australia), but will make periodic visits to HAO (Boulder, CO, USA) in order to pursue mathematical modelling and/or computer simulation of p-mode absorption by sunspots, and the analysis of the resulting data in comparison with observations. The overall aim is to understand the observed absorption and scattering quantitatively, and to determine what it reveals about sub-surface structure of solar surface magnetic flux concentrations.

Applicants should have demonstrated experience in one or more of magnetohydrodynamics, solar physics, computational gas dynamics, and computational astrophysics, and they should possess a Ph.D. or the equivalent in one of these or a closely related field. Availability to start as soon as possible is an advantage.

This position is funded by the Australian Research Council and administered primarily by Monash University. The appointment will be for two years, with a possible extension to a third year dependent on the availability of funding, and commence (at a date to be arranged) in the first half of 1998. It will be at Research Fellow Level A (Aus$38,092 - $40,889) or Research Fellow Level B (Aus$43,042 - $51,113). Appointment will be made at a level appropriate to the successful applicant's qualifications and experience and in accordance with Australian academic award classification standards for each level. Relocation assistance will be available.
