Minor and Major sequences for Science students

You need to plan your major and minor sequences in first year. Read the recommended pathways to assist you in the choice of units.

The discipline sequences offered in full or in part by the School of Mathematical Sciences are:

Mathematics (MTH)

Minor sequence in mathematics:

Level 1: twelve points from MTH1010, MTH1020, MTH1030, MTH1112, MTH2010, STA1010

Level 2/3: twelve points from MTH2xxx, MTH2xxx, ASP2051, ASP3012, ASP3051, ATM2022, ATM3011, STA2032 or STA3042.

Minor sequence in mathematical methods:

Level 1/2: either MTH1020, MTH1030, MTH2010 and MTH2032, or MTH1030, MTH2010, MTH2021 and MTH2032.

Major sequence in mathematics:

Level 1/2/3: a minor sequence in MTH, plus

Level 2/3: at least twenty four points, including at least eighteen points from MTH2xxx, ASP3012, ASP3051, ATM3011, ATM3022 or STA3xxx plus up to six points of units from one of MTH2xxx, ASP2051, ATM2022, STA2xxx, PHS3131, PHS3142 or other relevant mathematical units as approved by the Head.

Statistics (STA)

Minor sequence in applied statistics:

Level 1: STA1010 and MTH1030

Level 2: MTH2021 and STA2032

Minor sequence in statistics:

Level 1: MTH1030 and MTH2010

Level 2: MTH2222 and STA2032

Major sequence in mathematical statistics:

Level 1/2: MTH1030 and MTH2010, or MTH1030 and STA1010

Level 2: MTH2010 or MTH2021 or MTH2111 or equivalent (if MTH2010 not already taken in first year), MTH2222 and STA2032

Level 3: MTH2242, MTH2251, STA3042 and six additional points from the MTH units ate level 2 or 3.

Astronomy and Astrophysics (ASP)

Minor sequence in astrophysics:

Level 1: ASP1010 and ASP1022

Level 2: ASP2011 and (ASP2022 or ASP2051).

Students intending to complete a major sequence in Astrophysics should complete a minor sequence in MTH that includes MTH1030, MTH2010 and MTH2032 and they should also complete PHS1011 and PHS1022 with at least six points of PHS at level 2. Either MTH2051 or MTH2051 is also highly recommended.

Major sequence in astrophysics:

Level 1/2/3: a minor sequence in MTH*, PHS* or ASP, plus

Level 2/3: ASP3012 and MTH2362 and at least twelve points from ASP2051/ASP3051 (if not already counted above), MTH2011 (if not already taken as part of an MTH sequence), ASP3222 (if not taken in conjunction with a PHS major sequence).

Atmospheric Science (ATM)

Minor sequence in atmospheric science:

Level 1: twelve points of level l science units that includes at least one of MTH1020 or MTH1030

Level 2: ATM2211 and ATM2022

A twelve-point level-1 sequence in MTH is recommended for students intending to complete a major sequence in Atmospheric Science. Students intending to complete a major sequence in Atmospheric Science should complete at least MTH1030 and MTH2010 and it is recommended that they also complete MTH2032.

Major sequence in atmospheric science:

Level 1/2: a minor sequence in ATM*, plus

Level 3: ATM3011, MTH2362, ATM3212 and ATM3251
