Course requirements for BSc students

One of the advantages of the Bachelor of Science course is its flexibility in permitting studies across a range of disciplines. A key feature is the concept of major and minor sequences :

  • a minor sequence in a discipline comprises at least 24 points, including 12 points at level 1 and at least 12 points at levels 2 and/or 3;
  • a major sequence in a discipline comprises at least 48 points, including at least 36 points beyond level 1 and at least 18 points at level 3.

The BSc course requirements include the completion of at least one major sequence and at least one minor sequence or a second major sequence. These sequences may be in the same or different Science disciplines. When they are in the same discipline some overlap is permitted.

Students must also complete

  • SCI2010 How Science Works ;
  • at least one of SCI1020 Design of Science, STA1010 Statistical methods for science, MTH1030 Techniques for modelling, MAT1085 Mathematics IB (see the first year coordinator if you are not sure which of these is the most suitable unit for you);
  • and at least one unit from each of the 'PLE' discipline groups.

Further constraints on the choice of units for the BSc course also apply. These include that at most 60 points of level 1 units can be counted towards the degree and at least 24 points of level 3 units must be included in the overall degree program of at least 144 points.

Furthermore, at least 96 points of the program must be taken from the Science units that listed are under the approved disciplines for the Faculty of Science in the University Undergraduate Guide to Courses.

Students in other Science courses

The full course regulations for other Science courses, including the Bachelor of Science (Science Scholars Program), Bachelor of Arts/Bachelor of Science, Bachelor of Education/Bachelor of Science are provided under the Faculty of Science entry in the University Undergraduate Guide to Courses.

Students in the BSc/BE course can take only certain disciplines and units, as outlined in the detailed unit list for each branch of the course. This unit list is available from the Faculty of Engineering.
