Areas of interest:
My research focuses on the understanding of the physical climate system
and variability. In particular I study the large scale circulation and
climate variability, ranging from seasons to centuries, with the aim of
understanding causes of climate variability and change. A central part
of my research is the concept of deconstructing the high-dimensional
climate system into simplified modes or stochastic models of variability
by statistical analysis of observations and a hierarchy of model
simulations.
Recent subjects are:
Climate sensitivity, the ocean's lead in continental
climate change, global hyper climate modes, Modes of climate variability
(multivariate data analysis), El Nino Southern Oscillation, tropical
oceans interactions, large-scale air-sea interactions in the
midlatitudes, seasonal predictability of midlatitudes climate
variability, ocean mixed layer depth dynamic, the polar amplification of
climate change and interannual to Decadal variability in the Atlantic.
