Group marriages in Australia
Assoc. Prof. Hans Lausch

It was during my adolescence in Europe that I first came across
informative literature about Australia in a popular magazine article.
There, a most fascinating account was given about ``native customs'', and
I learned that Australians ``married in groups''. No further details were
given, however, and the reader's imagination had to fill in the gaps.
Only later did I realise the mathematical significance of those ``group
marriages'', which demonstrate that algebra may have been practised in
Australia over the last 40000 years (or so?).
