Richardson's Marvellous Forecast

Dr Simon Clarke

School of Mathematical Sciences
Monash University

While working as an ambulance driver in World War I, Lewis Fry Richardson made the first attempt at a forward prediction of the weather using a numerical method. These calculations were done by hand, taking two years to do a forward prediction of six hours. Unfortunately, the wildest guess would not have been wider of the mark! I'll discuss a recent study of Richardson's forecast which shows that with the benefit of a digital filter applied to the initial data, the forecast would have been quite reasonable.
