These talks will be self-contained presentations of mathematical concepts
and theorems. They are intended to be accessible to all mathematics
students. Coffee, tea and drinks will be provided.

Richardson's Marvellous Forecast
Dr Simon Clarke
School of Mathematical Sciences
Monash University
While working as an ambulance driver in World War I, Lewis Fry Richardson
made the first attempt at a forward prediction of the weather using a
numerical method. These calculations were done by hand, taking two years
to do a forward prediction of six hours. Unfortunately, the wildest guess
would not have been wider of the mark! I'll discuss a recent study of
Richardson's forecast which shows that with the benefit of a digital
filter applied to the initial data, the forecast would have been quite
reasonable.
