What is mathematical about Ethnomathematics?

Professor Alan Bishop
Faculty of Education
Monash University

A research topic causing some hot debate in the field of mathematics education is Ethnomathematics - relationships between culture and mathematics. Once strand of the research is historical, another is sociological, but the one for this lunchmaths is the anthropological strand. Researchers claim that artefacts such as indigenous maps, string games, and weaving patterns result from mathematical activities. The problem for those of us in mathematics education is how best to use ideas about ethnomathematics in improving mathematics teaching. At the heart of this problem is the question in the title.
