These talks will be self-contained presentations of mathematical concepts
and theorems. They are intended to be accessible to all mathematics
students. Coffee, tea and drinks will be provided.

Braid Groups
Dr Stephen Bigelow
Dept. of Mathematics & Statistics
Melbourne University
Braid groups are defined by certain arrangements of strings in space. Though complicated in appearance, I have been able to prove that braid groups can actually be thought of a groups of matrices: that is, Braid groups are ``linear''.
In this talk, I'll define braid groups, and illustrate the techniques
involved in analysing them by focussing upon a particular braid group,
B3.
