M4591 Climate and climate modelling

Aims

The course investigates the concepts related to climate change and variability. We examine palaeoclimatic variations and their reconstructions and explore the physical mechanisms that influence the climate system. Climate varies on all space and time-scales - from interannual variability to very long geologic variations associated with changes in the lithosphere.

Syllabus

The fundamental causes of climate variability and change will be covered. These include: Low frequency variability
External forcing
Geological factors
Interactions of the land-ocean-ice-atmosphere
High Frequency variability
Oceanography and ocean currents
Thermohaline circulation.
El-Nino and the Southern Oscillation

Prerequisites

ATM3011 Weather Phenomena and MTH3362 Fluid Dynamics
