M4581 Large-scale circulation of the atmosphere and ocean

Aims

The course investigates the dynamical principles governing the behaviour of the atmosphere and ocean on timescale of days to years and on space scales of hundreds of kilometres to the circumference of the earth. The tropical atmosphere and ocean will be emphasised.

Syllabus

Scaling in low latitudes and mid-latitudes.
Hadley circulation, Walker circulation.
Monsoons.
MJO Waves at low latitudes.
Mid-latitude Rossby Waves
Introduction to oceanography.
ENSO, including the delayed oscillation equation.
Thermohaline circulation.

Prerequisites

ATM3011 Weather Phenomena and MTH3362 Fluid Dynamics
