M4571 Mesoscale and convective dynamics

Aims:

The course explores the basic fluid dynamics and thermodynamics of the atmosphere on the mesoscale and convective scale, and applies these principles to the practical problem of forecasting severe weather.

Syllabus:

Fronts and frontogenesis in the Australian midlatitudes and subtropics.
Sea breezes, gravity currents and large-amplitude waves.
Shearing instability.
Organised convection, including supercells.
Tornadoes.
Forecasting severe weather.

Prerequisites:

ATM3011 Weather Phenomena and MTH3362 Fluid Dynamics
